Things to do on Wednesday (Free Day)

 

1.        Cumberland Falls State Park – “Niagara of the South”, 175 North exit 15 left to Hwy 90.  (1 ½ hour drive from Frakes).  Swimming pools, wading in the river, trails, horseback riding.  Dupont lodge-good food.  606-528-4121 -1hr. 15min.

 

2.        Cumberland Outdoor Adventures – Whitewater rafting.  606-523-0629 - 1hr. 15min.

 

3.        Pine Mountain State Park – Kentucky’s oldest park-Lodge, dining, pool, camping, golf, scenic Chained Rock overlook, hiking trails, miniature golf, nature center, picnicking areas, softball field, volleyball court.  30 minutes from Frakes Hwy 190 East toward Pineville.  Turn left at first stop sign and fork in road.- 30min.

 

4.        Cumberland Gap National Historical Park- Scenic overlook viewing Ky., Tenn., Va. all at once.  Wilderness road, Hensley Settlement (restored) sand caves, camping, tri-state trail, hiking, historic town of Cumberland Gap, iron furnace.  Visitor center open 8:00am-7:00pm.  Museum and picnic areas.  190 East.  Turn right on 25E about 15 miles to Middlesboro (45 minutes) Music and crafts 2:00 – 5:00 Wednesday afternoons. - 45 min.

 

5.        Middlesboro Restaurants – Wendy’s Pizza Hut, Hardees, Lees Famous Recipes, McDonald’s Sonic, Ky Fried Chicken, Captain D’s, Long John Silvers, Arby’s Burger King, Dairy Queen, Subway,  J Milton Steak House, Taco Bell, Krystals,.  Shopping Malls, Movie Theatre, Roller Skating, Laundromats, Grocery Stores, Ryan’s Steakhouse, Chinatown Cafe.

7.        Great Smokey Mountains National Park – Tennessee. Cades Cove, scenic loop, historical buildings, crafts, beautiful mountain views Indian reservation.- 2 1/2 hrs.

 

8.        Gatlinburg, Tennessee.  Large shopping malls, movies, nice restaurants, waterslides, chair lifts.  Dollywood, Porpoise Island, Ogles Water Park, Pigeon Forge. - 2 1/2 hrs.

 

9.        Knoxville, Tennessee.  Large shopping malls, movies, nice restaurants, Knoxville Zoo, University of Tenn. Campus, etc. 2 hours from Frakes. I 75 – S. 1 1/2 hrs.

 

10.     Berea Kentucky – College, crafts, Boone Tavern, Wilderness Road great drama.- 2hrs .

 

11.     Lincoln Museum – On campus of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tn.  Riding stables.  15 minutes S of Middlesboro. - 45min.

 

12.     Big Ridge State Park, Big Fork Park, other parks enroute to Knoxville Tenn. On I 75 S.  Paddle boats, picnicking baseball, Swimming. - 1 1/2 hrs.

 

13.     Museum of Science and Energy, Oak Ridge Tenn., Educational experience.  Enroute to Knoxville. - 1 1/2hrs.

 

14.     Red Bird Mission- Hospital, School.  Tour and Lunch available. - 1hr. 15min.

 

15.     Museum of Appalachia – Located on I 75 S follow signs. -1 hr. 15min.

 

16.     Sterns, Kentucky and the Big South Fork Scenic Railway 1-800-GO-Along. 1 1/2hrs.
