Library

Henderson Settlement has the only lending library in a radius of about twenty miles. This library, located in the Community Center, holds over 14,000 books for children, teens, and adults, as well as movies and magazine subscriptions. Supplied solely by donations, the library is able to supplement the educational programs of the Settlement, in addition to providing reading material for the community. Donations of recent books, VCR tapes and DVD's are always useful. Items may be brought or shipped to the Library at the Settlement address. To avoid duplication of magazine subscriptions, please contact the librarian before donating, 606-337-3613 ext. 308.

Adult Education and GED Program

According to the Kentucky Department of Education website, over the past five years, the transition rate from high school into adult life has decreased. While the number of graduates to move on to college has increased, the number of employed graduates has plummeted, and the percentage of "Not Successful" students is unfortunately at an all time high. The rate of high school dropouts had been improving until 2009, when the rate nearly doubled. To add to the disappointment, many experience a high rate of high school students and graduates of all ages who cannot read. Our goal is to implement a GED program as well as a literacy and general adult education program. The program will offer a judgment-free atmosphere for people to come and further their skills and education. If you would like to donate to this cause and help us to enrich the lives of people in our community, please feel free to do so as your contributions would be greatly appreciated!

College Scholarships

Continuing their education after high school is valuable for the seniors in our community. For more than twenty years we have been providing scholarships to youth and adults interested in furthering their education. In the spring and fall, youth and adults applying are awarded scholarships ranging from 100 to 300. In 1985, the Board of Directors established the Annual Henderson Settlement Scholarship awarded to a graduating senior who lives in the geographical area we serve. This $1,000 scholarship is given each year for a four year period. The scholarships continue to help so many individuals who are pursuing a higher education. Several of our staff and family members appreciate the assistance given them at one time. We will continue to work with the young people of our community, providing encouragement and a vision for a brighter future.
