One of the reasons Hiram Frakes wanted 100+ acres of land to establish Henderson Settlement was to support a herd of beef cattle that would provide food for the many students and volunteers. Well - that Beef Cattle Program is still a viable part of our community outreach a hundred years later!
We continue to raise beef cattle on our fenced-in valley pastures. By regularly rotating in young heifers with older cows we are able to maintain a healthy breeding herd of approximately 60-70 cows. Some of the bulls born each year are sold as on-the-hoof yearlings to help fund the program while others are used for high quality beef sold in our Thrift Store at below-market prices.
Participate & Support
The herd of cattle, fences needed to keep them safe, hay for the winter and vaccinations require a lot of time, effort and money. You can participate and support this program by donating directly to it, donating to the general budget, reviewing our Needs List and Amazon wish List, adopting a farm/cattle work camp project and volunteering.
Whether you’ve raised your own cattle or don’t know a steer from a heifer, whether you’re a finish carpenter or don’t know which end of a nail to hit - we’ll find a place for you to jump in and make a difference down here on the farm!
