Henderson Settlement’s greenhouse program goes all the way back to the 1940's. From growing food for volunteers, students & staff, providing seedlings to the community for their spring gardens to growing mums and other flowers for Mother’s Day - the greenhouse has long been a fixture in our community outreach.
We have four large greenhouses, a high tunnel and a germination room. Along with the seedlings and flowers provided to the community - we grow tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, leaf lettuce, and kale for our kitchen. We also have a program to sell mums to churches and schools for fundraisers.
During our Fall Festival and Halloween events potted flowers and jack-o-lantern pumpkins are sold through the Thrift Store.
Participate & Support
The goal for the greenhouse - other than providing healthy vegetables and beautiful flowers - is to break even on operating costs. There’s a lot involved in maintaining the greenhouses, water & electric bills, seeds, pots and fertilizer. You can participate and support this program by donating directly to it, donating to the general budget, reviewing our Needs List and Amazon Wish List and by volunteering.
If you’ve got a green thumb - or just love to be around plants - come as a volunteer and be part of this great program. There’s planting, watering, weeding and harvesting to be done pretty much year round.
