seniors

Henderson Settlement operates a community volunteer-led Seniors’ program with the primary objective of providing love, care and fellowship for senior citizens living in our community service area.  In many cases, the folks we serve no longer have access to transportation, and may also face solitary lives due to the death or relocation of their loved ones.  Also, food security is an issue for our community seniors, just as is the case in many other areas of the United States.

Our senior center operates three days a week. We use vans to pick up the seniors in the morning and provide breakfast and lunch while they participate in a variety of activities such as crafts, devotions, and fellowship with each other. We currently have 22 seniors enrolled for in-center activities, and average 16 participants on given day. There are 96 seniors registered to receive USDA food commodities distribution through our Food Pantry operation, providing an important supplement to their fixed income. There are two days each month that staff take the seniors to town for groceries, shopping, and to pick up medication.

Once each month our seniors have the opportunity to participate in a fun outing such as bowling, special shopping, or a once a year overnight outing. The outings give them a chance to get out and have some fun that otherwise probably would not be an option. One of the seniors’ favorite indoor activities is Bingo, awarding prizes to the winners from sources that the Seniors’ Program community volunteer leaders develop.  The Seniors’ Program participants also work hard sewing quilts and doing crafts to sell in order to help fund these outings. They can always use ideas and donations for their projects and their trips.

Donations can be sent to Henderson Settlements address and more information can be attained by calling 606-337-3613 Ext. 307
